The “Classic” mailing format is a staple of the Direct Mail business. Commonly mailed in a #10, 6” x 9” (15.24 cm x 22.86 cm) or 9” x 12” (22.86 cm x 30.48 cm) envelope, ¹ the complete package usually consists of five elements:

• The outer envelope
• A letter
• A brochure
• An order form
• A Business Reply Card or return envelope

Personalised postcards are the most widely used format for promotional mailings. They can be standard- or over-sized and personalised for an individual recipient or addressed generically, such as to “Occupant.”

• For some applications, can be the least-expensive option

• Using an oversized format can allow your message to stand out from regular mail.
• Postcards can have a low response rate relative to other forms of Direct Mail, so think about including a strong call to action and offer to help drive response.
• A return address is not required unless the Return to Sender option is used.

When you have a lot to communicate—whether it’s announcing the launch of a new business or presenting an updated take-out menu—a flyer or brochure, also known as a “self-mailer,” can be the perfect format.

• It’s a familiar format and can work well for such items as menus and sales brochures.
• It can be ideally suited to high-volume campaigns, depending on how often your message changes and the quality of printing used.
• It’s possible to include many of the same elements used in the “Classic” format.
