Newsroom - Letters to the Editor

October 3, 2003

(Letter sent to the Timmins Daily Press)

Dear Editor:

I would like to point out some key information that was missing in the September 30th Barbara Reynolds article, "Telemarketing calls, mail can be reduced with new service."

Canada Post has been respecting consumers' choice not to receive unaddressed material since July 1997. Posting a clear notice on the outside of the mail receptacle can indicate that choice.

This allows Canada Post to better serve our customers and ensures unaddressed material reaches those who value it. And research has shown that 62 per cent of consumers look through unaddressed advertising mail some, or most of the time, and 84 per cent of Canadians read the advertising mail addressed to them most of the time.

Since Canada Post began giving consumers a choice of not receiving unaddressed material, only some two per cent of Canadians have actually chosen not to receive it.

Sincerely,

John Caines
