New stamp celebrates 100 years of Maclean's magazine

A hundred years ago, John B. Maclean bought an ad agency's in-house business journal and launched it under the name The Business Magazine. The magazine was a digest of articles from Canadian, American and British periodicals. Then, with a new title, Busy Man's Magazine, it shifted to a national magazine format. In 1911, it became Maclean's, started to cover politics and the arts and included works of fiction.
A weekly publication since 1978, Maclean's is owned by Rogers Media Inc., a division of Rogers Communications Inc. A French-language edition, Le Magazine Maclean, appeared in 1961 but it was merged in 1976 with L'Actualité. With close to 2.8 million readers a week, the magazine enjoys a larger one-time audience than all other Canadian news and public affairs media. The magazine spotlights Canada's rising talent, thinkers and doers from business to entertainment, from politics to sports and provides a forum for a new generation of Canadian writers, illustrators and photographers.
Many of Canada's finest writers either began at Maclean's or flourished there. Writers whose work has appeared in the magazine include Mordecai Richler, Lucy Maud Montgomery, Robert Service, Stephen Leacock, Pierre Burton and June Callwood. The list of past-editors also reads like a literary icon review, with some of Canada's most distinguished writers, reporters and men of letters - including Thomas B. Costain, Ralph Allen, Peter Gzowski and Peter C. Newman - holding the post.

The stamp was designed by Susan McIntee and Nick Monteleone, co-founders of the design firm 52 Pick-up Inc. of Toronto. This is their first stamp design. The stamp depicts the front covers from four different issues of Maclean's (left to right): March 1911; July 9, 1954; November 3, 1962 and July 1917.
Available for sale at post offices across the country today, the stamp measures
40 mm x 30.5 mm, and will be sold in a pane of 16 stamps. Lowe-Martin printed
4 million of the stamps, using 6-colour lithography plus spot varnish, and P.V.A. gum, on Tullis Russell Coatings paper. The stamp is general tagged on all four sides. The Official First Day Cover will read TORONTO, ONTARIO.
