Another million-letter year!

Jan. 27, 2006

- It would seem that the traditional letter to Santa remains as popular as ever. For the fifth consecutive year, Canada Post helped Santa answer more than a million letters from children in Canada and around the world. Thanks to Santa's dedicated postal elves, the pen pal connection between Santa and his friends remains solid.

"The hand-written note remains the number one choice for children when they want to share something with Santa Claus," said Bob Waite, senior vice-president Communications and Stakeholder Relations at Canada Post. "Canada Post is proud to bring Santa and his friends together through the mail."

Canada Post received 1,045,739 letters to Santa (a three per cent increase from last year) along with 34,039 emails (a twelve per cent increase from last year) during the 2005 program. More than 11,000 Canada Post volunteers helped Santa respond to letters in 28 languages, including Braille.

"I always enjoy reading the letters the children send to me," said Santa Claus. "In fact, after Christmas, Mrs. Claus and I often take the time to read many of them again!"

Since Canada Post employees first began helping Santa answer his holiday mail more than 30 years ago, Santa has enjoyed millions of wonderful letters, all delivered by Canada Post.
