Canada Post announces 2011 Literacy Awards winners
In recognition of International Literacy Day, Canada Post today announced the winners of its 2011 Community Literacy Awards.
Canada Post today unveiled the 2011 Mental Health stamp to help kick off the company’s annual fundraising campaign for community-based mental health initiatives across Canada.
The Canada Post Foundation for Mental Health today awarded grants totalling $2.1 million to 47 non-profit community groups that help Canadians living with mental illness.

Canada Post Corporation today reported that its core Canada Post business (“Canada Post segment”) lost $35 million in the second quarter ended July 2, 2011. That represents a $70-million decline from the $35-million profit recorded by the Canada Post segment in the same period a year earlier. During the quarter, the Canada Post segment lost an estimated $167 million in revenues due to the impact of the labour disruption in June involving the Canadian Union of Postal Workers.
The Canada Post Group* today reported that it experienced a continued deterioration in its core Canada Post segment in 2010.

Canada Post adds third stamp to the Royal Wedding collection
Canada Post today announced a third stamp to complete the Royal Wedding collection. The domestic Permanent™ stamp features a candid photo of the newlyweds in their open landau shortly after completing their wedding vows at Westminster Abbey. The stamp will commemorate the first Royal Visit to Canada following their wedding. One million booklets of 10 stamps are available for sale online and by mail order and as of today, June 28 at post offices across Canada. The two other stamps were issued on the wedding day, April 29, and already over 5 million stamps have been sold.

Financial losses are mounting at Canada Post as the rotating strike being carried out by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) enters its 12th day. Canada Post estimates that it has lost over $70 million in revenue – and that figure is climbing daily. Exacerbating the problems is the fact that Canada Post is continuing to incur a significant wage bill for 48,000 members of CUPW while their union inflicts massive losses on the company through costly rotating strikes.

After seven months of negotiating and eight days of costly and painful strike activity, the union wants to start over
At Canada Post, we believe the union’s strike activity should stop, but accepting their demand to revert back to the old collective agreement in order to make that happen is completely unacceptable. By maintaining the uncertainty for customers and hurting our revenues, the union’s proposal is tantamount to asking for full pay to remain on strike. No company would accept that, especially with the damage already done to the business. We need flexibility to manage costs in response to the large drop in volume and corresponding revenues caused by the union’s activities. We also need to be able to end the uncertainty and achieve a new collective agreement that sets a course for the future.

Negotiations Between Canada Post and CUPW Are Stalled
Canada Post and CUPW remain far apart on several fundamental issues. The union today rejected major compromises proposed by Canada Post to address sick leave and staffing levels. CUPW also refuses to discuss any initiatives that will reduce costs and address the problems of declining mail volumes, increasing competition and electronic substitutions of traditional mail. After almost a week, the union has again rejected Canada Post’s generous offer.

Postage rate increase proposed for January 2012
Canada Post would like to remind Canadians that the domestic basic letter rate will increase by 2 cents, from 59 cents to 61 cents, for standard letters weighing up to 30 grams, effective January 16, 2012. This is part of a five year pricing strategy announced in 2009.

Hope, delivered: $2.2 million raised for mental health initiatives
Record number of grants to be awarded
OTTAWA – Canada Post employees and customers have once again delivered hope. The post office’s 2010 campaign for the Canada Post Foundation for Mental Health raised more than $2.2 million. The campaign’s success will result in a record number of community organizations who will receive funds from the Foundation in 2011. The Foundation provides much-needed funding to non-profit, community-based organizations that provide support and care for people coping with mental illness.

Access to Information and Canada Post
Today, the Office of the Information Commissioner of Canada (OIC) released a report card on the performance of a number of institutions under the Access to Information Act, including Canada Post.
Canada Post now offers Canadians the convenience of verifying their identification documents for background checks at their local post office. The new service is offered through an agreement with BackCheck™, Canada’s largest provider of pre-employment screening. Canadians will now be able to walk in to their local post office and proceed with their ID verification – a requirement of the background check process for employers requiring a criminal record check.

Canada Post grows two new stamps!
Canada Post is about to add another flower to its bouquet of floral stamps. This year’s pair of PERMANENT™ stamps, to be released March 3, 2011, features two colorful Sunflowers (Helianthus annuus); ‘Sunbright’ and ‘Prado Red.’ In a first for Canada Post, the flowers featured were grown specifically for the purpose of being the stars of this stamp series.

Art Canada series enriched by colourful palette of native artist
Today, Canada Post issued three new stamps featuring the artwork of Canadian aboriginal artist Daphne Odjig. The stamps feature three of Odjig’s acrylic pieces.
