Question

Why are there customs fees on parcels delivered to me?

  • You are expecting an item from out of country and want to know how you pay the customs fees.
  • You feel that the custom fees leveraged against your item are incorrect.

Answer

All items that enter Canada from a different country are subject to customs inspections and fees based upon the type of item.

After an item has cleared customs, and fees and duties have been placed against the item, we must collect them before handing over the item. You can pay customs fees directly to delivery personnel or at the Post Office when collecting your item. We accept cash (exact change only), credit card or certified cheque payable to Canada Post Corporation.

Have you tried...

  • Read about how customs fees are applied and which items are exempt on the Canada Border Services Agency website.
  • If you feel that the amount of the customs fees on your item is incorrect you can:
    • Refuse the item and not pay fees (item will be returned to sender).
    • Instruct the delivery agent that you wish to appeal the fees (item will be marked as appeal and sent back to customs for re-evaluation).
    • Accept the item, pay the fee and then appeal to customs on your own.
