Anne of Green Gables

She’s captured the imagination of both young and old around the world, and her story has been translated into 15 languages, including Japanese. Her name is Anne Shirley and she’s the spirited, unstoppable, red-haired heroine in a very famous book called Anne of Green Gables, written by Lucy Maud Montgomery.

In 2008, this beloved novel turned 100 years old, and to celebrate, Canada Post issued two special stamps—one featuring a portrait of Anne and the other showing an image of Green Gables.

Today, the house known as Green Gables is a national historic site in Cavendish, Prince Edward Island, and attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists each year. The story of Anne of Green Gables has also been captured on film as well as in a musical, which has been performed at the Charlottetown Festival every year since 1965.

Anne’s character also lives on in several sequels written by Lucy Maud Montgomery, including Anne of Avonlea, Anne of the Island, Anne of Windy Poplars, Anne’s House of Dreams, and Anne of Ingleside.
