Danger in the forest

Don’t be fooled – these big cats may be lounging around, but they’re actually fierce predators. Swift and silent, they live deep in the forest, hiding in trees and secretly stalking their prey. With a giant leap, they strike suddenly, attacking hares and deer.

The truth is, these fearsome wild cats are in danger themselves. Long ago, cougars roamed the wilderness all across Canada, but today they’re commonly found only in Alberta and British Columbia. Amur leopards live near the border of China and Russia, but fewer than 50 still survive in the wild. Both animals have been over-hunted by humans, and their forest habitats are threatened.

Although Canada and China are half a globe apart, we have a lot in common, including the cold and snowy forests these big cats need to survive. Thirty-five years ago, Canada and China agreed to share full diplomatic relations, so our governments now talk about co-operating on issues important to both countries. Canada Post and the China State Post celebrate this anniversary together with two domestic rate stamps (50¢ in Canada), one a Canadian design showing the cougar, the other a Chinese design showing the Amur leopard.
