Spectacular celebrations

What goes boom in the night, with flashes of light and bright-coloured sparks in the sky? Those explosions of sound so high from the ground make you jump up and laugh with delight!

Fireworks light up the night with cascading colours in a noisy celebration. All around the world, in many different cultures, people celebrate New Year’s Day, national days and other big public events with a sparkling light show under the stars.

There’s a reason for all the noise. Fireworks are actually made from the same ingredients as gunpowder. It’s a recipe believed to have been invented in China about two thousand years ago. Although fireworks have long been used for celebrations, in the days before guns were developed they were also used in war. Fireworks really do explode, so even those made for home use can be very dangerous if you’re not careful.

But, when put on public display by trained professionals, fireworks are nothing but fun. These days, if a fireworks show is planned, everyone knows it’s going to be a very big celebration. For birthdays, anniversaries and parties of all kinds, Canada Post has issued a PERMANENT™ domestic rate stamp featuring festive fireworks, just right for celebrating.
