Lights. Camera. Action!
Did you know that Canadians are a very talented bunch when it comes to the entertainment industry? It’s true. For years now, Canadian stars have shone brightly in both popular television shows and blockbuster movies. Do you have a favourite homegrown actor?
On June 30, 2008, for only the second time, Canada Post issued a quartet of dazzling domestic rate (52¢) stamps that feature four great screen stars that are—you guessed it—Canucks! These actors include Marie Dressler, Raymond Burr, Norma Shearer and Chief Dan George.
Marie Dressler, who was known as the first female star of film comedy, made movie history with a leading role in Tillie’s Punctured Romance, the first feature-length comedy ever made.
Raymond Burr is perhaps best known for his roles as lawyer Perry Mason in the television show of the same name and wheelchair-bound detective Robert Ironside in Ironside.
Norma Shearer, a classically poised and elegant star of the silver screen, was named “First lady of the talkies” by the press for her role in MGM’s 1929 movie Trial of Mary Dugan.
Chief Dan George is perhaps the only Hollywood icon to have been discovered as a 60-year-old bus driver! Among his many roles, George played Old Lodge Skins in Little Big Man, a milestone American film.
