80 years young
This is the magical story of a little princess who grew up to become a wonderful queen. But it’s no fairy tale. Elizabeth Alexandra Mary was born in London, England, on
April 21, 1926, the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York. As a little girl, she never thought she’d be queen herself, because her uncle was heir to the throne.
Everything changed suddenly when Elizabeth was just ten years old. Her father unexpectedly became King George VI, and she knew that one day it would be her turn to rule. Elizabeth worked hard, studying history and law, and helping the King in his duties. She was only 25 when her father died in 1952, a young mother who became Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
The Queen turns eighty this year. She is a proud grandmother, and one of Britain’s longest reigning monarchs. As Canada’s head of state, she is well loved in this country. To celebrate her birthday, Canada Post has issued a domestic rate (51¢) stamp, which will be re-issued on a special souvenir sheet as a commemorative ($1.49) stamp on her special day in April. |
