Dogs with jobs
They’re not only man’s best friends, they also hold down some very responsible jobs. Throughout history, dogs have played some pretty important roles—from finding missing persons and herding livestock, to protecting our homes and loved ones.
For visually impaired people, guide dogs are loving companions that help provide mobility and a life of greater independence. Because of their special job, guide dogs are often seen in some places where you don’t usually find animals such as in grocery stores, on buses or at concerts. You’ll recognize these specially trained canine companions by the harness and handle each wears when it’s working.
Golden retrievers and Labrador retrievers make the best guide dogs because these breeds have quiet and calm dispositions, a high level of initiative and concentration, and a strong desire to please. When you see these beautiful creatures, you should resist the urge to touch them—after all, they have important work to do and mustn’t be distracted!
On April 21, 2008, Canada Post recognized the remarkable contributions of guide dogs by issuing a domestic rate (52¢) stamp, which actually includes some words in Braille.
