Pop quiz

It’s pop culture if absolutely everybody knows about it. Movies and television are great examples—motion pictures have only been around for about a hundred years, but who doesn’t know about the latest films, the newest TV shows, and the biggest screen stars?

What you might not know is that Canadians have been making it big in Hollywood since film and television began. This year, Canada Post honours Canadian achievements in Hollywood with a set of domestic rate (51¢) stamps honouring four great screen stars who happened to be Canadian.

Who was the first international movie star? When motion pictures were new, people around the world knew and loved Mary Pickford, the silent film actress known as “America’s Sweetheart.”

Who was the original damsel in distress? Fay Wray starred in the memorable 1933 film “King Kong” opposite the biggest, hairiest co-star in the movies.

Who was Pa of the Ponderosa? Lorne Greene became a hero to millions of viewers playing father figure Ben Cartwright on television’s “Bonanza.” Who was Uncle Buck? John Candy played this lovable movie uncle and many other crazy characters in his career as a film and television comedian.
