Sticking with tradition

Most people think that Canada’s official national sport is hockey. And they’re right—but it’s only Canada’s official winter sport. Our country’s official summer sport also involves using a stick to score goals by getting a hard rubber object into the opposing team’s net, but it’s not hockey, it’s lacrosse.

Our country’s national summer sport is a ball and stick game that began in the native cultures of North America as both a spiritual and physical practice.

Today, lacrosse is still an important part of native culture. It’s also become popular in Canada and internationally. Between July 13 and 22, 2006, more than 20 field lacrosse teams from around the world gathered in London, Ontario, for the 2006 World Lacrosse Championships. A domestic rate (51¢) stamp showing a high-energy illustration of a lacrosse player marks this historic event. The player is blurred slightly to give a feeling of movement. He holds his stick high as he charges across a background of event tickets and nets.
