Climbing to the stars
“This way to the stars” is the motto of the Alpine Club of Canada (ACC). The Club, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, is Canada’s national mountaineering organization.
Today, the ACC’s more than 10,000 members have access to 24 alpine huts and 19 regional clubs across Canada to ensure people can enjoy mountain adventures year round. Clubs exist in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec.
To honour the ACC and the popular sport of mountaineering, Canada Post issued a commemorative domestic rate (51¢) stamp on July 19, 2006. The top of the stamp shows a modern-day climber using the latest in equipment, while the bottom portion represents the climbs and equipment of the 1900s.
The ACC will hold its 100th Annual General Meeting in the Wheeler Hut in Glacier National Park, British Columbia. The hut was named in honour of the Club’s first president, mountaineer Arthur Oliver Wheeler. |
