Flying high
What is one of the most thrilling sights on Canada Day? The Snowbirds, of course!
For 35 years, the Snowbirds have delighted spectators from Canada and around the world with sky-high precision aerobatics that demonstrate the skill, professionalism and teamwork of the Canadian Forces.
While military aerobatic flying in Canada goes back to as early as 1929, it wasn’t until 1971 that the Snowbirds were formed. The team was named the Snowbirds as a result of a contest held at the CFB Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, elementary school. The team first flew under this name at an air show on July 11, 1971. Since that time, the Snowbirds have continued to awe millions of spectators with breathtaking formations that include Arrowhead, Big Diamond, Canada Goose and more.
The Snowbirds perform all their maneuvers from a fleet of uniquely painted Canadair CT-114 Tutors. Flying at speeds ranging from 185 km/h to 590 km/h, and with sometimes as little as 1.2 metres between them, the Snowbirds really must be among the best fliers in the world!
To celebrate this amazing team’s 35-year anniversary, Canada Post has issued two domestic rate (51¢) commemorative stamps and a souvenir sheet—with great images that will have you flying high.
