Containerizing the Bundles

Bundles can be containerized either in bags or in hardsided containers. These containers are used to move mail through Canada Post's mail distribution network.

Bags

Small (A-6) mail bags
for Short and Long (S/L) and Oversize (O/S) mail

Large (A-3) mail bags
for Short and Long (S/L) and Oversize (O/S) mail

  • The minimum fill requirement for an A-6 (small bag) is four (4) bundles or 3.5 kg.
  • The minimum fill requirement for an A-3 (large bag) is six (6) bundles or 7 kg.
  • There are no sequencing requirements for bundles when bags are used.
  • If there are insufficient bundles to fill a bag to Level 1, 2, 3 or 4 of the NPS, place the bundles in a Residue bag.
  • The last Residue bag has no minimum fill requirements.
  • The weight of a bag cannot exceed 25 kg.
Hardsided Containers

Lettertainers
for Short and Long (S/L) mail

Flats Tubs
for Oversize (O/S) mail

While all containers should be 100% full, the minimum acceptance by Canada Post is 95% full when more than one container qualifies for a destination.

  • When only one exists for a destination at that level of the NPS, the minimum acceptance for Canada Post is 70% full.
  • There is no minimum fill requirement when only one (1) Residue container exists.

The weight of a container cannot exceed 25 kg.

Labelling the Containers

Correct labelling is essential to ensure that mail is directed to the appropriate work centre within a Canada Post facility.

Addressed Admail labels must be white with black lettering and must include the following information:

  • Service Name (e.g. Addressed Admail)
  • Service Option (e.g. NDG)

The following NPS routing information must be present on a container label:

  • Facility Postal Code
  • Facility Name
  • Province abbreviation (e.g. ON, MB, SK)
  • Routing designation (e.g. STN, LCD)
  • Labelling Bags

    Canada Post requires two labels on each mail bag:

  • First, you require a bag label, commonly called a "keeper tag". This is attached to the label holder of the bag. The bag label must contain the following data:
    • NPS routing information (e.g., K1G 0A0 OTTAWA ON);
    • A selected Service Option. In this case, it’s the NDG Service Option.

  • Second, a tie-on-tag must be securely fastened by plastic cable ties or twine to the neck of the bag. The tie-on-tag should contain the same information as the keeper tag, in this case:
    • NPS routing information (optional);
    • A selected Service Option (NDG).

  • Vinyl Label Holder

    Customers who deposit their mailings in bags may elect to use the vinyl label holder that is attached to the corner of the bag. This will eliminate the need to produce a keeper label and to attach a tie-on-tag. Customers, need only to insert a hardsided container label into the vinyl label holder.

    The label must contain all of the necessary information and be inserted into the vinyl label holder with the information facing out. It is very important that the information remain completely visible after being inserted into the vinyl label holder (S0-54).

    The vinyl label holders (S0-54) and plastic tie strap (200-12-080) can be ordered from the Canada Post Customer Relationship Network by calling 888-550-6333

  • Labelling Hardsided Containers

    Canada Post requires a label on each container. This is inserted in the label holder of either the lettertainer or the flats tub. The hardsided container label must contain the following data:

  • NPS routing information (e.g., K1G 0A0 OTTAWA ON);
  • A selected Service Option. In this case, it’s the NDG Service Option.

NOTE: The label requirements for Residue containers and bags will remain “Office of Deposit” FWD abbreviated and the word “Residue”. However, in certain areas, your Canada Post representative may request that you label the Residue containers/bags to the Office responsible for processing the Residue mail instead of the Office of deposit.
