Sustainability

At Canada Post, we know that Canadians look to us to reflect their values and expectations. With this in mind, we continue to shift toward an Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) lens as we serve Canadians. Doing so will help to integrate these as key elements of everything we do.

That’s why environmental sustainability became a more pronounced focus of our decision-making in 2019 – and we have some early accomplishments to show for it:

  • In August 2019, in a joint statement with all our bargaining agents, we affirmed the importance of reducing Canada Post’s environmental footprint. We then worked together to create an Environmental Action Plan for 2020-22 which will be published in 2020.
  • With 374 in 2019, we began to deploy several hundred hybrid light delivery vehicles to our fleet. This was an important step toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions from our owned vehicles. We invested in energy saving measures for our buildings to reduce operating costs and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Canada Post engaged with key players in the mail industry in 2019 to discuss how the industry can work together on key environmental challenges. Among other things, this group will look at ways to reduce waste and single-use plastics in the mail system.
  • We’re also joining with other organizations to further our environmental priorities. In 2019 we became a founding member of the Pembina Institute’s Urban Delivery Solutions Initiative in support of efficient and sustainable urban freight to reduce air pollution and curbside congestion in major cities. We also became members of Electric Mobility Canada, which brings together industry, non-governmental organizations, academics and governments to innovate on electric mobility. Finally, Canada Post also became a signatory to the United Nations-supported Principles of Responsible Investment (PRI)Opens in new window, the world’s leading proponent of responsible investment. Among other things, this will help us to incorporate ESG considerations into our investing and decision-making.

Later this year, our 2019 Corporate Sustainability Report will provide a more comprehensive disclosure of Canada Post’s non-financial performance. Going forward, we intend to share progress made toward our sustainability goals and the PRI principles in that yearly report.
