Our 2016 stamps

Before we ring in the New Year, we’re looking back at last year’s stamps, which highlighted some of Canada’s most celebrated – and little-known – stories

Despite their small size, our commemorative stamps have a unique ability to capture stories in a single image. We use them to tell the stories of Canada – and this year’s collection covered it all.

Our 2016 stamps shone a light on our beautiful landscapes and acclaimed artists. They delighted us with tales that were spooky, prehistoric and literally out of this world. They paid tribute to our heroes who fought the good fight, whether on the hockey rink, on the battlefield or in the political arena.

We thank all those who brought these stories to life with incredible illustrations and designs that elevated this collection to new artistic heights. Take a look:

Year of the Monkey

Eighth in an ongoing series, the brilliant, inventive – and sometimes impatient – Monkey brought in the New Lunar Year.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

We featured a black-and-white photograph of Her Majesty taken at Buckingham Palace by noted British fashion photographer David Bailey to mark the Queen’s 88th birthday.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Canada

Some of Canada’s spectacular UNESCO World Heritage sites are showcased for the new set of definitive stamps: the Landscape of Grand Pré and Old Town Lunenburg in Nova Scotia, the Rideau Canal in Ontario, Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump in Alberta and SGang Gwaay in British Columbia.

Black History: No. 2 Construction Battalion

100 years after the No. 2 Construction Battalion was formed, Canada Post honoured its determined soldiers on a new stamp that marked Black History Month.

Hydrangeas

The latest issue of our ongoing flowers series paid tribute to spring by featuring the blooming, voluptuous hydrangeas.

Women’s Suffrage: 100th Anniversary

Issued on International Women’s Day, this commemorative marked the 100th anniversary of a political milestone for Canadian women.

Canadian Photography

Part of a five-year series culminating in 2017, these seven stamps exhibit the work of some of Canada’s most accomplished photographers from over the past 150 years.
