Have you ever wondered what the judges are looking for in a photography contest? Do you have an amazing picture that never seems to win the big prize? Try these tips to improve your chances of winning!
Follow the contest rules
We can’t stress this enough! If you have any questions about the rules, be sure to ask. The judges probably see thousands of perfect photos. Even one tiny violation of the rules will guarantee that your entry is thrown out and not considered.
Make your photo memorable
Find new ways to make your photos stand out. The fact is, awesome photos don’t always win competitions. You want to catch the judge’s eye and make your picture the one to remember.
- Try shooting from a new angle - maybe on the ground looking up at your subject.
- Get up close and fill the whole frame.
- Wait for the right light – soft and diffused, or bright but with overcast skies.
- Check out the background – you don’t want to draw attention away from your focal point.
Follow the contest theme
Don’t make it easy for the judges to eliminate your entry! When the judges are down to the final 2 photos, they’ll choose the one that without a doubt fits the contest theme. If you want to win the contest, you must stick to the theme – the more obvious, the better.
Allow yourself to make mistakes
Keep your camera with you constantly. Inspiration is all around you all the time. Sometimes getting the glory shot means, trudging through mud, being on the receiving end of odd stares, and being in uncomfortable positions. You might delete one hundred mistakes, but the glory shot will be worth it. Take your pictures in rare and unexpected conditions, and your photographs will stand out ahead of everyone else’s.
Tell a story
A great picture is one that tells a story within the first few seconds of looking at it. This will ensure that your photo stands out from the rest. Try looking at photos of previous contest winners for inspiration. But remember to stay within the contest rules!
