How do I use the Canada Post reloadable Visa prepaid card?

Learn how to use your Canada Post reloadable Visa prepaid card. Find out about the temporary card, the permanent card, and what happens when your card expires.

Buy your card with cash or debit at Canada Post

Visit your local post office.  Bring government-issued photo identification, such as a driver’s licence or a passport, to buy a Canada Post reloadable Visa prepaid card. You must also be 16 years of age or older. Use the Find a Post Office tool to find your closest Canada Post office.

Add money at time of purchase

When you buy a Canada Post reloadable Visa prepaid card, you will get a temporary card to use until your permanent card arrives in the mail.  You can add up to $500 onto your temporary card, which is active as soon as you buy it. This is the only time you can add money until your permanent card arrives.

Shop with your temporary card

Use your card everywhere Visa is accepted, including online.

There are a few things you cannot do until you have your permanent Canada Post reloadable Visa prepaid card:

  • Withdraw funds at an ATM.
  • Make purchases where a PIN is required.
  • Buy from online merchants outside Canada and the U.S.
  • Reload your card.

Receive your permanent card by mail

Your personalized, permanent card will be delivered to the address you provided within 14 business days.

Activate your permanent card by phone

Call Visa Cardholder Services at 1-866-760-1543 to activate your card and get a personal identification number (PIN). Your temporary card will automatically be deactivated and any money on the card will be transferred to your permanent one.

With your permanent card, you have full access to all card functions. You can:

  • Reload your card.
  • Withdraw cash at any ATM displaying the Visa symbol.
  • Get an over-the-counter cash advance from any Visa-issuing financial institution.

Exceptions:

  • Your card cannot be used for online gambling.
  • Cards will not work at pay-at-the-pump gas stations and other automated machines. You must take your card inside to the gas station cashier to use.
  • Online acceptance at all websites cannot be guaranteed due to varying security levels.

Reload your permanent card at any time
